Death of James Gell and his widow
About 1804 , Sussex
James Gell "was a Sussex County Gentleman very devoted to the hunting field - He kept a pack of hounds and built a large house in Pevensey Bay. He had 11 children - 5 boys and 6 girls. He was one day returning from hunting but, after wishing the huntsman Goodbye, he did not reach home. On a search being made, he was found dead by the roadside & his horse standing beside him (a favourite hunter).  A week after his funeral, his widow was sitting late into the night looking over documents and business papers, when her high widow's cap (as worn then) was set on fire by stooping over a pair of candles on her writing table.  So speedily did the flames spread that she was burnt to death.  This all happened when Harriet Bennett Gell (wife of General Adam Crawford) was 4 years old.  Her father, James Gell, always kept a large coach & horses in readiness to convey his large family to safety in the event of Napoleon & the French landing at Pevensey Bay."
